What is the Academic Health Department?.
The Academic Health Department (AHD) is a formal partnership between the University of Tennessee, Department of Public Health and the Knox County Health Department, however the collaboration extends to the surrounding community, region, state, and beyond. The purpose of the AHD is to bridge public health academia and practice to improve public health. One activity paving the AHD bridge is Public Health Grand Rounds (PHGR).
What is Public Health Grand Rounds (PHGR)?
PHGR is a one-hour multi-disciplinary seminar designed to connect public health researchers, practitioners, and community advocates around specific public health focus topics. Grand Rounds are held quarterly at the Knox County Health Department auditorium.
Who should attend?
Anyone who works, teaches, researches, volunteers, or shares a vested interest in the focus topic is encouraged to attend. Public Health is by nature multi-disciplinary, which means any given topic may be pertinent to a variety of disciplines. The potential outcomes you may expect are described below.

Expected outcomes
- Education. Engaging with timely, relevant topics using didactic and interactive methods results in increased knowledge and skills. This two-way communication contributes to both Workforce Development and faculty connection with practitioners.
- Relationship-building. Networking among presenters, practitioners, faculty, and students around areas of mutual interest builds and extends trust.
- Practice-focused research. Relevant research opportunities are identified as stakeholders discuss needs, emphasizing the iterative cycle where research translates to practice and practice informs research.
- Shared funding opportunities. Existing resources may be leveraged or new ones identified through collaboration.
- Improve the public’s health. The ultimate goal is to ensure that prevention interventions are supported by science and effective in practice in order to improve the public’s health. This motive drives all other outcomes.
