Albert Iannacone, MS, has a background in environmental chemistry and applications; thereof, in fields such as drinking water/wastewater treatment, hazardous waste treatment/disposal/minimization, and investigation/remediation of contaminated sites (brownfields, Superfund sites). This latter work led to interest and experience in the field of human health risk assessment, and eventually to a position as an environmental epidemiologist at the Knox County Health Department in the Emergency Preparedness group. There he participated in public health investigations ranging from the Kingston Coal Ash Spill to local potential cancer clusters, groundwater contamination incidents, and the health effects of smoke from waste dump fires. His interest in zoonotic illnesses led to collaborative projects with UTCVM and mentoring of student interns from the departments of Public Health and the Veterinary School for many years while at KCHD. He also served as a resource for local news media on topics from home radon exposure to the proper collection and disposal of pharmaceutical wastes. He was a member of the group that established the pharmaceutical waste collection program in Knox County, and has served on the board of the Tennessee Clean Water Network. Now semi-retired, he maintains an active interest in these fields and lectures on the intersections between environmental contamination and public health.
Public Health / Emergency Preparedness: Targeted epidemiological research (e.g. cancer cluster studies, outbreak or contaminated site investigation support) at Knox County Health Department. Notable projects included environmental contamination and health effects of the Tedford Road landfill and Knoxville mulch facility fires, mold contamination at a local middle school, creation of a database of all drinking water wells in Knox County and use of veterinarian data as a sentinel public health indicator (student intern projects. He spearheaded the US Public Health Service investigation of the Smokey Mountain Smelters site leading to its Superfund cleanup as an emergency response action.
Environmental Remediation: Prior to KCHD, targeted research/investigations included numerous Superfund and other environmental contamination sites prior to and/or during remediation of contamination, or related environmental health investigations. Proprietary research into oxidative technologies for wastewater treatment was performed at Olin Water Services, 1985-89. Participated in research investigating the feasibility of agricultural application of sewage biosolids while at the Kansas City Water and Pollution Control Dept. (1983-85). Research in graduate school (1981-83) in immobilization of photochemical catalysts on polymer substrates, and their quantum yield for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen (for development of solar-generated hydrogen as a fuel source).

- Awarded for for accelerated remediation of 36 PCB-contaminated natural gas pipeline compressor stations. The rapid pace of the work resulted in significant cost savings and favorable press coverage for the EPA.

- Awarded for laboratory/manufacturing Total Quality Management team that reduced off-specification product batches (and thus hazardous waste) from 27% to 3% of batches manufactured, through improved training, manufacturing, testing and raw materials control, producing six-figure savings annually.
